For your protection on the internet

Below is a fraudulent email that was sent to me. It’s worse than spam, it’s a phishing email – which means that the unsuspecting person is supposed to click the link, thinking it’s really the IRS – and then enter personal or financial information which will then be stolen by the perpetrators of the fraud.

I knew this was a fraud just by looking at it. This time, I decided to click it just to see what happens (don’t try this at home) – and then I discovered a nifty protection feature of my web browser.

The page came up and said:
“This web page at www.irs.gov.vrddr.ru has been reported as a web forgery and has been blocked based on your security preferences.”

“Web forgery.” Ok, I knew that. Great. What interests me is why it was blocked “based on my security preferences.”

Turns out, the Firefox browser downloads updated lists of web forgeries every 30 minutes. So if you stumble upon a site on the list, you’ll get this nice warning message.

After the warning, just click the button that says:
“Why was this page blocked?”

and you’ll go to the page below, which offers helpful information on malware and phishing, dangerous internet-things that you would do well do know about:

I’m thankful that the freewill contributors in the Firefox/Mozilla project are working to protect my interests. Much appreciated!

Teddy,

Yerubilee
