Therefore, all the generations from Awraham until Dawid were fourteen generations, from Dawid to the captivity were fourteen generations and from the captivity of Bavel until the Mashiyach were fourteen generations.  18. Now the birth of Y’shua, the Mashiyach, was like this:  While Maryam his mother was betrothed to Yosip, without them being united, she was found pregnant by the Ruach haKodesh. 19. But Yosip, her husband was just and did not desire to expose her, yet he was thinking in secret that he would dismiss her. (Matt. 1:1-19 AENT).

Genealogy of the Messiah:  Who Says Matthew Cannot Count to Fourteen?

Greek NT comes under accusation with blatant mistakes as found in Matthew 1.  Verse 17 asserts 
that the generation count must be 14, 14, & 14, and yet in Greek verses 12-16, one can only find 13 
generations, including Y’shua.  In the Aramaic Peshitta NT, the v.16 Yosip is Maryam’s father, not 
husband: Problem resolved.  Secondly, if she is attached to the Davidic line only by marriage as 
written in Greek, then her offspring cannot be the Messiah. The Peshitta (Eastern Aramaic) text of the New Testament fixes all this.

Third, the Peshitta distinguishes the first Yosip (v.16) from the second (v.19), so the contradiction 
with Luke 3:23 disappears. Fourth, see Matt. 8:9 for another usage of “gowra” as “father” rather 
than “husband.”  Lastly, note that it is inappropriate to double any name in an attempt to balance 
the Greek lists.

 

* The word gowra designates a protector-male or guardian; the context of this verse determines its specific meaning.  Y’shua elsewhere says “which one of gowra, if he has a son…(Mt.7:9),” obviously “father” is intended.

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 from the Aramaic

Because Elohim, who commanded the light to arise from darkness, has Himself shined in our hearts, that we might be illuminated with the knowledge of the glory of Elohim on the face of Y’shua the Mashiyach.*  7. And hereby is his love perfected with us; that we may have open countenances in the day of judgment; because as he was, so also are we in this world.  18. In love there is no fear; but perfect love casts out fear; because fear exists in peril, and he that fears* is not perfected in love.

* A.G. Roth: This refers to the fear of man, the fear of loss and every other form of fear, except the Fear of YHWH.  The Fear of YHWH helps to perfect the love of YHWH.  A young child is taught about boundaries to protect and sustain the child’s welfare.  The more understanding a child has of their boundaries and environment, the more likely they will not fall into danger.  A child does not have the knowledge of their parent; neither does mankind have all the knowledge that YHWH has.  When YHWH establishes righteous boundaries for mankind, it is only a fool who oversteps them.

Definition: Sin

And everyone that practices sin, perpetrates iniquity; for all sin is iniquity. (1 John 3:4 AENT pg. 654).

“…all sin is iniquity.”  Sin and iniquity are equivalent according to the “New Testament,” more aptly called the  Renewed Covenant.  But what is iniquity?

The dictionary defines iniquity as “lack of justice or righteousness; wickedness; injustice.”  The page at Dictionary.com includes a usage example from the Torah (Exodus 34:6-7).  Iniquity (lack of righteousness) can therefore be described as “Lawlessness,” which is “Torah-lessness” for those who consider the Bible to be Divinely inspired by the Creator.

You therefore, my beloved, as you know (these things) beforehand, guard yourselves or else, by going after the error of the Torahless, you fall from your steadfastness.  (2 Peter 3:17 AENT pg.458).

While sin is sin, meaning that sin is Torahlessness, without compromise, keep in mind that there is a difference between the occasional lapse vs. a lifestyle of practicing sin:

Everyone that is born of Elohim does not practice sin because his seed is in him and he cannot sin because he is born of Elohim. (1 John 3:9 AENT pg.654)

Secondly, our Father in Heaven has always been merciful towards those who repent:

YHWH, YHWH El, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:6-7).

Background on the Itamar Massacre in Samaria

Many of us in Israel have been trying to make sense of the March 12 attack on a family quietly sleeping during Shabbat here in Samaria, Israel.  

Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu reported on 13 March 2011 in Israel National News that victims of the Itamar massacre were already subject to an earlier attack.  The Rabbi Fogel family was expelled from Gush Katif in 2005 when then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon caved into international pressure to remove Jews from sovereign Israeli territory in Gaza as a “peacemaking” measure.  It goes without saying that Israel has received no peace in return for that land.  Instead, all Israel got was the 2006 Second Lebanon War in the north, amidst over 4,000 rockets fired from Gaza into the south.

 Rabbi Uri Fogel was not one of these religious types who expect State benefits while refusing the mandatory military service.  No, Uri Fogel served his country as an IDF tank unit officer.  After being expelled from Netzarim in Gaza, he relocated his family to Ariel.  They then moved to nearby Itamar two years ago where he taught ex-IDF soldiers in the post-high school yeshiva, or religious school.  

Then, they were murdered on Shabbat, 12 March 2011.  Knifed in their sleep while a breach in the Itamar security fence went unreported to the local army unit.

When trying to understand what happened, I try to look at the events leading up to the event.  One month prior to the Itamar Massacre, Israel removed the nearby roadblock checkpoint (Harriet Sherwood, “Binyamin Netanyahu calls on world to act after killing of Jewish settlers,” The Observer, 13 March, p.15.  Reported on www.guardian.co.uk ).  Why was a checkpoint removed just before an attack?

 During the week before the massacre, Israel was involved in peace talks with the Palestinians.  On Thursday 10 March, envoys of the Quartet met in Israel separately with Israelis and Palestinian representatives.  (“Quartet ‘Giving Up Hope’ Of Renewing Israeli-Palestinian Talks,” Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, 17 March 2011, http://eajc.org/page32/news22744.html)

So, the Itamar massacre has made it difficult for peace talks to continue.  What is the international response?  Force a Palestinian state anyhow.  As Barak Ravid wrote in Haaretz, “Growing pessimism about the prospects of a breakthrough in Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations is prompting new international calls for the unilateral establishment of a Palestinian state.” (Barak Ravid, Haaretz, 17 March 2011, “Quartet ‘Giving Up Hope’ of Renewing Israeli-Palestinian Talks”

 Already on Tuesday 8 March 2011, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe had hinted that the E.U. might recognize a Palestinian state is a “possibility that should be kept in mind.” 

The international community wants to force a Palestinian state down Israel’s throat unilaterally.  To do this, they must stifle peace talks secretly while supporting them openly.  The answer:  murder “settlers” who insist on living on Biblical land controlled by the State of Israel.  This cancels any conciliatory stance that Israel might have gained, giving the international community reason to step in and force the Two-State “Solution.” 

The last time settlers were murdered was in Hebron in September 2010, just prior to direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians.  I find it strange that settlers are killed when peace talks are in process.

In the course of things, Rabbi Uri Fogel may well be added to Barry Chamish’s list.  What list?  The list of those secretly killed by Israel for political reasons:  Rabbis Shapiro, Kahane, Lieberman, as well as the attacks on Rabbi Chaim Duckman, and Moledet leader Miriam Lapid’s family.   (Barry Chamish, “The Secret War Against the Settlers,” http://israel-politics.tripod.com/War-Against-Settlers.htm, http://barrychamish.com)

Oddly, a man with the same first name as that of the mourning settlement, Itamar Ben Gvir, sued Barry Chamish several years ago for calling him a Shabak agent.  Chamish named Ben Gvir as a provocateur complicit in pushing peaceful protests beyond the limit in Netzarim, Gush Katif, leading to the justification of the expulsion.  So, Itamar Ben Gvir and his hoods made the settlers look incalcitrant.  This gives the Israeli military the excuse they needed to mistreat the settlers and expel them.  Then, one settler family, a rabbi with his wife and children, winds up living in Itamar where they are savagely murdered.  It begins with Itamar and ends with Itamar.  Or does it?

 

I just got a phone call from a member of our home Bible study group:  A terrorist has exploded a bus near the central Bus Station in Jerusalem.  This, in addition to the 50 mortar attacks on civilians last week.  And, the massacre in Itamar.

All of this pressure builds up toward dividing the Land of Israel into indefensible slices.  Giving land to her sworn enemies in return for empty promises of peace. “Peace, peace, but there is no peace.”

 

“Behold they shall surely gather together, but NOT BY ME,” says YHWH in Isaiah 54.  “Whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.” 

 

 

¶ Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith YHWH.

Romans 12:2

And be not conformed to this world; but be you transformed by the renovation of your minds: and discern you what is the good and acceptable and perfect pleasure of Elohim. (Romans 12:2 AENT)

How do we “discern” the “pleasure” of Elohim? How do we begin to know what gives Him pleasure? What kind of Wisdom do we need to know this? How do we obtain this Knowledge?

Answer: The Fear of YHWH.

The fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever. (Ps 111:10 AV)

The fear of YHWH is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Pr 1:7 AV)

The fear of YHWH is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy (Set Apart) is understanding. (Pr 9:10 AV)

Notice that in most English translations (which are from the Greek), the verse in Romans speaks of discerning the “will” of Elohim. That word is ok, in that doing His commandments is certainly according to His will. However it gets confused with a fatalist kind of Father-imagery, as if He dictates to us different levels of the bulls’ eye of His will, i.e. shall we go to college or get a job. However, as we read in the Aramaic English New Testament, the word “pleasure” is more suitable; it speaks toward what we can do to please Him.

Do we want to please Him? Do we actually LOVE Him?

And by this we will be sensible that we know him, if we keep his Commandments… He that says “I am in him” is bound to walk according to his halakha. My beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but the old Commandment which you had from the beginning; and the old Commandment is the Word which you have heard. (1 John 2:3,6&7 AENT)

If you love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15 AENT)

Halakha הלכה / How To Walk

And by this we will be sensible that we know him, if we keep his Commandments… He that says “I am in him” is bound to walk according to his halakha. My beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but the old Commandment which you had from the beginning; and the old Commandment is the Word which you have heard.

“Halakha” in Hebrew, הלכה means “the way of walking.”

Halakha (הלכה) comes from the verb “lelekhet” ללכת which means “to go, to walk; to go ahead; to leave, to pass, to disappear; to follow.”

In Biblical lifestyle, Halakha הלכה means to base one’s life upon the written Word of Elohim.

In Judaism, however, Halakha הלכה refers to following traditions of men. Those traditions are often based upon the Word, but quite often conflict with the Word as well. According to tradition, if the tradition conflicts somehow with the Word, the tradition trumps the Word. At least, that’s what the tradition says!

In the verse above, however, we are not taught to follow the traditions of men. When we read that “Yeshua is our Halakha” this means that He shows us the way we must walk, according to the way He walked.

This is what it means to be a disciple: To walk as He walked.

Yeshua walked according to the Word. He is the Word (John 1). The Word is the same Word from the beginning (Genesis: “In the Beginning”):

My beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but the old Commandment which you had from the beginning; and the old Commandment is the Word which you have heard. (1 John 2:7 AENT pg.652)

What then is the Way in which we should walk ללכת?

Yeshua is the Way.

Yeshua is the Walking.

Yeshua is הלכה.

Y’shua said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father except by me.” (John 14:6 AENT pg.280).

Definition: Jerusalem Syndrome

A pattern of behavior where a person in Jerusalem “acts out” in socially inappropriate ways, such as accosting people in public, sometimes in “Biblical” clothing, while actually believing themselves to be Elijah, or The Messiah, or One of the Two Witnesses, or A Prophet, or other such improbable Biblical character. Not to be mistaken for true ministers sharing the Love of YHWH on the streets and byways of Jerusalem.

Jerusalem syndrome is a phenomenon aware of people, pilgrims, tourists who come to Jerusalem are so overwhelmed by the sense of holiness here that something happens to them. And certain fantasies, redemption fantasies of making the world a better place overcome them, and they believe they have a messianic mission which they must fulfill, which can cause problems. And this can happen sometimes to people who showed no sign of any sort of mental illness before this. And more often it will happen to people who have already been diagnosed and have had problems with their adjustment before coming to Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem syndrome is a group of mental phenomena involving the presence of either religiously themed obsessive ideas, delusions or other psychosis-like experiences that are triggered by a visit to the city of Jerusalem. It is not endemic to one single religion or denomination but has affected Jews, Christians and Muslims of many different backgrounds.

Today’s Teaching

In today’s teaching we examine 1 Cor. 8 plus Colossians chapters 1 & 2. First we noted that Chapter 8 is on the topic of food sacrificed to idols, and has no bearing on the question of overall diet. The first two chapters of Colossians highlight that the Body of Mashiyach is the Kehilah (congregation) — and then we carried the conversation from there.
