Matthew 1:1-19 in the Aramaic

Matthew Chapter 1

1. The book of the genealogy of Y’shua the Mashiyach, the son of Dawid, the son of Awraham.

2. Awraham fathered Yitz’chak, Yitz’chak  fathered Ya’akov. Ya’akov fathered Yehuda and his brothers.  3. Yehuda fathered Peretz and Zarakh by Thamar.  Peretz fathered Khetzron.  4. Khetzron fathered Aram. Aram fathered Amminadav, Amminadav fathered, Nekhshon.  Nekhshon fathered Salmon.  5. Salmon fathered Bo’az by Rachav, Bo’az fathered Awbed by Rawth, Awbed fathered Ishai.  6. Ishai fathered Dawid the king. Dawid fathered Shlemon by the wife of Awrea.  7. Shlemon fathered Rechav’am, Rechav’am fathered Aviyah, Aviyah fathered Asa.  8. Asa fathered Yahoshapat, Yahoshapat fathered Yoram, Yoram fathered Uziyahu.  9. Uziyahu fathered Yotham, Yotham fathered Akhaz, Akhaz fathered Hizkiyahu.  10. Hizkiyahu fathered M’nasheh, M’nasheh fathered Amon, Amon fathered Yoshiyahu.  11. Yoshiyahu fathered Yochanyahu and his brothers in the captivity of Bavel.  12. And after the captivity now of Bavel, Yochanyahu fathered Sh’altiel, Sh’altiel fathered Zerubavel.  13. Zerubavel fathered Awiud, Awiud fathered Elyakim, Elyakim fathered Azor.  14. Azor fathered Tzadoq.  Tzadoq fathered Achin, Achin fathered El’ichud.  15. El’ichud fathered El’azar, El’azar fathered Matan, Matan fathered Ya’akov.  16. Ya’akov fathered Yosip, the guardian* of Maryam, from whom was born Y’shua, who is called the Mashiyach.  17. Therefore, all the generations from Awraham until Dawid were fourteen generations, from Dawid to the captivity were fourteen generations and from the captivity of Bavel until the Mashiyach were fourteen generations.  18. Now the birth of Y’shua, the Mashiyach, was like this:  While Maryam his mother was betrothed to Yosip, without them being united, she was found pregnant by the Ruach haKodesh. 19. But Yosip, her husband was just and did not desire to expose her, yet he was thinking in secret that he would dismiss her. (Matt. 1:1-19 AENT).

Genealogy of the Messiah:  Who Says Matthew Cannot Count to Fourteen?

Greek NT comes under accusation with blatant mistakes as found in Matthew 1.  Verse 17 asserts
that the generation count must be 14, 14, & 14, and yet in Greek verses 12-16, one can only find 13
generations, including Y’shua.  In the Aramaic Peshitta NT, the v.16 Yosip is Maryam’s father, not
husband: Problem resolved.  Secondly, if she is attached to the Davidic line only by marriage as
written in Greek, then her offspring cannot be the Messiah. The Peshitta (Eastern Aramaic) text of the New Testament fixes all this.

Third, the Peshitta distinguishes the first Yosip (v.16) from the second (v.19), so the contradiction
with Luke 3:23 disappears. Fourth, see Matt. 8:9 for another usage of “gowra” as “father” rather
than “husband.”  Lastly, note that it is inappropriate to double any name in an attempt to balance
the Greek lists.

* The word gowra designates a protector-male or guardian; the context of this verse determines its specific meaning.  Y’shua elsewhere says “which one of gowra, if he has a son…(Mt.7:9),” obviously “father” is intended.

2 Corinthians 4:6-7 from the Aramaic

Because Elohim, who commanded the light to arise from darkness, has Himself shined in our hearts, that we might be illuminated with the knowledge of the glory of Elohim on the face of Y’shua the Mashiyach.*  7. But we have this treasure in an earthen vessel that the excellence of the power might be from Elohim, and not from us.  (2 Cor. 4:6-7 AENT pg. 542)

* A.G. Roth: This verse strengthens the idea that the glory of Elohim is “reflected” in Y’shua’s face.

Definition: Sin

And everyone that practices sin, perpetrates iniquity; for all sin is iniquity. (1 John 3:4 AENT pg. 654).

“…all sin is iniquity.”  Sin and iniquity are equivalent according to the “New Testament,” more aptly called the  Renewed Covenant.  But what is iniquity?

The dictionary defines iniquity as “lack of justice or righteousness; wickedness; injustice.”  The page at Dictionary.com includes a usage example from the Torah (Exodus 34:6-7).  Iniquity (lack of righteousness) can therefore be described as “Lawlessness,” which is “Torah-lessness” for those who consider the Bible to be Divinely inspired by the Creator.

You therefore, my beloved, as you know (these things) beforehand, guard yourselves or else, by going after the error of the Torahless, you fall from your steadfastness.  (2 Peter 3:17 AENT pg.458).

While sin is sin, meaning that sin is Torahlessness, without compromise, keep in mind that there is a difference between the occasional lapse vs. a lifestyle of practicing sin:

Everyone that is born of Elohim does not practice sin because his seed is in him and he cannot sin because he is born of Elohim. (1 John 3:9 AENT pg.654)

Secondly, our Father in Heaven has always been merciful towards those who repent:

YHWH, YHWH El, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:6-7).

Hebrews 12:1: Two Ways to Improve Your Race

“Therefore let us also, who have all these witnesses surrounding us like clouds, cast from us all encumbrances and sin which is always prepared for us; and let us run with patience the race that is appointed for us.” (Hebrews 12:1 AENT pg.424).

Notice here how we are encouraged to remove ourselves not only from sin, but ALSO from “encumbrances.”

Encumbrances must be somehow different from “sin:”  Why else would the writer distinguish the two using the separator “and?”  Therefore, we can improve our Race by removing (1) sin and (2) encumbrances from our lives.  Here we will focus on #2. However, the NT definition of sin may surprise you: Check here and here.

Back to “encumbrances:”  Are there things in your life which slow down your race, even if they’re not firmly in the “sin” category? Take a moment and prayerfully consider this.

Chocolate may not qualify as sin, but it could be an encumbrance; caffeine and alcohol are arguably in this same category.  With what reading material do we fill our minds?  Which TV shows, movies, music do we allow past the gates of our eyes & ears?  Which relationships hinder our walk, and which friends exhort us higher?  Our expenditures of time, money, and resources: Are these an encumbrance to our race?  It is up to the individual to decide for themselves.

Consider the witnesses who surround us who are mentioned in the previous chapter:  Hebrews 11.  Consider the shortness of this present life compared with eternity.  Are we really running our race with patience, efficiency, with a goal to actually win?

Don’t you know that they who run in the stadium, run all of them; yet it is one who gains the victory.  You run so as to attain.  25. For everyone who engages in the contest restrains his desires in everything. And they run to obtain a crown that perishes; but we, one that does not perish.  26. I therefore so run, not as for something unknown; and I so struggle, not as struggling against air;  27. But I subdue my body, and reduce it to servitude; lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should despise myself.  (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 AENT pg.514.)

May the Messiah Y’shua bless your race.

Do you find the translation of these NT verses to be attractive?  They have been translated into English directly from the Aramaic–the language spoken by Messiah Y’shua.  More info at the link below:

P.S.  The Aramaic-speaking Syrian church has always known without a doubt that the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews was Paul the Apostle.  This fact was only debated in the West, never in the East.

What About Christmas?

As for Christmas, I gradually arrived at the point a couple years ago where I no longer celebrate it.  In short, it is futile to try to sanctify a pagan feast.  Sanctify = “Holy-ize” = “Kadosh-ize” = “make Set Apart” and we already have the Set Apart Feasts as determined by YHWH in Leviticus 23.  Who else but YHWH has the authority to declare Set Apart Feasts?

INSERT: This isn’t as upsetting to life as it seems at first.  Biblically, we can still attend feasts if we feel it is beneficial.  See “What about Feasts” for comments on 1 Cor. 10:27.

The arguments for Christmas just don’t pan out anymore for me:  “Well, we’re not celebrating paganism, we’re celebrating the birth of Jesus.”  Ok – can anyone find ONE Biblical example of anyone celebrating the birth of Y’shua the Messiah as a commemorative yearly event?  How come none of the disciples captured Y’shua’s pearls of wisdom after He blew out the candles?

For that matter, can we find ANYONE’S birthday in the Bible?  Yes, and well, they’re all bad.  For example, on Herod’s birthday, John’s head was chopped off.  How sweet!  Put it on the frying pan with the chicken head.  So the birthday thing in general… not Biblical, but a holdover from pagan cultures which had astrological traditions.   So why celebrate our own birthdays?  Therefore, why Y’shua’s?

His death is what carries meaning for us.  The Atonement.  And that is memorialized in Passover.

Ok, so how about if people don’t get the revelation about how unbiblical birthdays are… and they really want to put up a tree and hang balls on it and kiss under the mistletoe and remember that Jesus was born in Bethlehem?  (All except the last item on that list have pagan origins).

Let me ask them this:  Why, oh why, must we remember Messiah’s birth on the VERY EXACT DAY that the pagans celebrated that the false god “Mithra” was said to have been born?

Next we go to Exodus 32 and take a look at the golden calf scenario.  Most of us grew up thinking that Israel had sunk into depraved idolatry at that point.  They had, but not like we think.  They had entered into MIXED WORSHIP.  Aaron takes a gander at the shiny new calf idol, and then proclaims a feast to YHWH!!  Verse 5.  They were MIXING the worship of YHWH with pagan practices from Egypt.  YHWH absolutely hated that.  YHWH hates mixture.

Christmas is mixture.  Birthdays in general are mixture.  We see in the Bible what YHWH thinks about mixture in Jeremiah 10 and other places.  In other words, “DO NOT imitate the ways of the pagan cultures.”

The Israel of YHWH, by contrast, rather than following pagan customs, instead follows YHWH-ordained customs, such as those in Lev. 23.  In fact, it is YHWH Himself who DECIDES which customs are SET APART unto YHWH and which customs are not, therefore, er, pagan.

In Jeremiah 16:19 the “gentiles” finally wake up and confess the sin of their “handed down” traditions.

In Ephesians 2:11, Romans 9:6-7, and Romans 2:28-29, we see that we are no longer gentiles.  We are ex-gentiles.  There are only two categories of nations in the Bible:  Israel, and Gentiles (goyim).  We are called out of the goyim (like Abraham was in the first place) and called into Israel of YAH.  We are called to leave behind out goyish pagan customs and enter into new life in Y’shua Messiah with HIS customs and ways of life.  “Come out of her my people!”  Rev. 18.  Babylon represents the ultimate in rebellion against YAH (Tower of Babel) which is paganism aka witchcraft.

1Sa 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity (lawlessness) and idolatry.

1 Peter 1:15 “as it is WRITTEN, be Set Apart as I am Set Apart”

This is a cross-reference to Lev. 11.  Find the “be Holy” section in that chapter!

Peter writes “be Holy in ALLLLLLLLL your conduct… as it is WRITTEN…”

Just to rip away the veil a little bit here… when a “new testament” writer says, “as it is written…”, he is referencing the “old testament.”  (See page 833 in the AENT, in the article “Founders of the All Gentile Church” beginning on 829 for more info on these erroneous terms “old testament”).

The deception goes very, very deep.  But armed with Truth, we can overcome the deception:

“One basic truth can be used as a foundation for a mountain of lies, and if we dig down deep enough in the mountain of lies, and bring out that truth, to set it on top of the mountain of lies; the entire mountain of lies will crumble under the weight of that one truth, and there is nothing more devastating to a structure of lies than the revelation of the truth upon which the structure of lies was built, because the shock waves of the revelation of the truth reverberate, and continue to reverberate throughout the Earth for generations to follow, awakening even those people who had no desire to be awakened to the truth.” – Delamer Duverus

1 Peter 1:13-17 (AENT)

13. Wherefore, gird up the loins of your minds and be awake perfectly and wait for the joy which will come to you at the revelation of our Master Y’shua the Mashiyach 14. as obedient children: and be you not conversant again with those former lusts with which you lusted when without knowledge. 15. But be you set apart in all your conduct, as he is set apart who has called you. 16. Because it is written: Be you Kadosh even as I am Kadosh. 17. And if so be, you call on the Father with whom is no respect of persons and who judges everyone according to his deeds, pass the time of your stay with fear…

In Hebrew and in Aramaic, “Kadosh” (root: קדש) means “Set Apart.”  Therefore, “Be not conversant with those former lusts…” (v14) refers to setting oneself apart from those former things.  To be “Set Apart” (vs 15,16) is to be separated from something, and to be set apart unto something else.  Here the calling is exactly the same as it was given to the Children of Israel: “Be set apart from the world and its ways, and be set apart unto Me.”

V.16 “Because it is written…”  Where is is written?  Well, any concordance or Bible search program will tell you: Lost of places, including Leviticus 11 and Leviticus 20, for example.  Let’s examine a few of them:

Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am YHWH your God… And ye shall be holy unto me: for I YHWH am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine. (Lev 20:7 & 26 AV)

…For I am YHWH your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.  For I am YHWH that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.  (Lev 11:44-45 AV)

See also: Numbers 15:40, Deuteronomy 23:14.

So what is Peter saying?  He said “Be awake perfectly” (v.13) like “obedient children” (v.14).  Pay attention!  Why? So that we will “not be conversant with those former lusts with which you lusted when without knowledge.”

The Word is saying that we must separate ourselves from the things that pertain to sinful life.  This is because we are called by YHWH (v.15) to “Be Set Apart as YHWH is Set Apart.”

Why this calling?  Because YHWH “judges everyone according to his deeds” (v.17).  This is consistent with Y’shua’s final words:

“Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me to recompense everyone according to his work.” (Rev. 22:13 AENT)

Which just so happens to be consistent with the rest of Scripture:

Also unto thee, O Adonai, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work. (Ps 62:12)
Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me: I will render to the man according to his work. (Pr 24:29 AV)

The context of Peter’s first letter is that it is written to believers in Y’shua haMashiach, who are the “elect and sojourners” (v.1), who are “chosen… to the obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Y’shua the Mashiyach ” (v.2).

As anyone can see here, disciples of Y’shua haMashiach have been chosen for “obedience” as well as for “the sprinkling.”

Still ready to press on?  We mentioned several specific verses in the Tanakh earlier, but to get the greater context, check out the full chapters:  Leviticus 11 and 20; Numbers 15; Deuteronomy 23.

Wherefore, Torah is Set Apart; and the commandment is set apart, and righteous, and good.  (Romans 7:12 AENT)

Are Earthquakes Signs from God?

“And there will be signs in the sun and in the moon and in the stars. And on earth, distress of the nations and confusion from the roaring of the sound of the sea. and upheaval that casts out life from men, because of fear of what is about to come upon the earth. And the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man who will come in the clouds with much power and great glory. But when these things begin to happen, have courage and lift up your heads, because your salvation draws near.” (Luke 21:25-28 AENT).

This might seem like freaky stuff here.  But there’s hope: Here, Yeshua the Messiah has foretold that we can know what is happening  certain signs.  Of course, only followers and disciples of Yeshua would bother to pay any attention to His words.  But people have been benefiting from Yeshua’s words for many centuries.

For more info about signs in the moon, check the article here.

For more info about why Yeshua is the Messiah, go here and here and here and…

The increase in earthquakes over the past 50 years or so is just the beginning.  I believe that there are some very good reasons why they will increase, and it’s all under control of YHWH the Creator who said way in advance that He will do these things.  The following passage describes what happens in the near future when people figure out that earthquakes are coming:

“And the kings of the earth, and the nobles, and the captains of thousands, and the rich men, and the men of valor, and every servant and free man hid themselves in caves, and in the clefts of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and to the clefts, ‘Fall over us, and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of their wrath is come; and who is able to stand?'” (Revelation 6:15-17 AENT).

Can the Creator make earthquakes?  Well, if He’s the Creator, the answer is self-evident: He can do whatever he pleases.  If your curiosity is piqued, leave a message or find some way to start your search for the Truth.  I recommend the Bible, from cover to cover.  Pick up a great one here and here.

May the Creator bless your path with light.

Revelation 21

Rev 21: 3 (AENT)
And I heard a great voice from heaven, which said: “Behold, the tabernacle of Elohim is with men; and he dwells with them: they will be his people; and Elohim will be with them, an Elohim to them.  4.  And every tear will be wiped from their eyes; and there will no more be death, nor mourning, nor wailing; nor will pain be any more; because the former things are passed away.”  5.  And He who sat on the throne, said: “Behold, I make all things new.”  And he said: “Write; ‘because these are the faithful and true Words of Elohim.'”

Berlin Update

Inviting the Holy Spirit to Germany

Just returned from Berlin, where the 100-year Berlin Declaration was reversed (Sept 15 1909) and the Holy Spirit is officially welcomed to Germany (Sept 15, 2009).

For over 12 hours, 500 congregants heard history about the Berlin Declaration to fully understand what happened, and why repentance is needed; the corporate body prayed aloud together, reading a scripted declaration renouncing the 1909 declaration, repenting for rejecting the move of the Holy Spirit, and instead welcoming the Holy Spirit to the nation. There were times of praying in small groups, and times of heartfelt worship in musical form. The presence of the LORD was certainly with us and many were witnesses.

Of course, it’s going to take alot more than key leaders with 500 people gathered to “officially” welcome the Holy Spirit into Germany. It’s going to take individuals bearing the fruits of the Spirit more and more in their lives (Gal. 5:22, Eph 5:9). It’s going to involve “bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2Co 10:5)

Additionally:
1Th 5:15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

Yet, making vows and declarations does have significance. Just look at the original declaration 100 years ago (rejecting the Holy Spirit in Germany) and think about the implications for the whole world.

However, that 1909 declaration would have had little effect had it not been continuously reaffirmed by repetitive, consistent behavior.

The same is true of the new declaration. It’s a start; but without deliberate reinforcement it will be meaningless.

Mentioned quotes:
Gal 5 (KJV):
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

Ephesians 5:
8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
